“I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, wickedness was there …” (Ecclesiastes 3:16).  Seeking justice or “bringing one/them to justice”, as the word is used, defined, and practiced, most often means getting revenge.  The punishment or expiation for the wrongdoing is decided before the cause or the root of the wrongful act is discerned.  I’ve always been disappointed with that aspect of human nature: justice = revenge.  Righteous or wicked our human fate is the same … we, everything, becomes part of the matter from which we came. In the meantime, we must function within human systems, which include “the law.”  Jesus was brought to justice and, as Paul writes, was “publicly exhibited as crucified“ (Galatians 3:1).  Christ’s death has been made clear to us as if we have seen the photos of him hanging on the cross … justice was served … revenge was had.  In that message we learn ”the law” must be obeyed.  Asked what Jesus said about justice, and the law, and revenge I replied, Jesus said, ‘love one another,’ and, he fairly thumbed his nose at the law.  A simple, perhaps flippant answer on my part … perhaps I dwell too deeply in the message I have heard and grown to understand about Jesus.  In the message we understand about faith and the promise of God ”those who have died are more fortunate than the living” … a just reward for living this life as Christ-like as possible.
